The Painful Truth about Time
Staring at the soil won’t make the tree grow faster

Some things grow quickly, but they’re either easily uprooted or we call them weeds. Things that last need time to take root before they sprout, and more time before you see any fruit. And we can’t stand it! We want what we want and we want it now.

The challenge is that our lack of patience in good ideas and processes often result in no results. What I mean is that change and improvement at all levels may take a great deal of time. In fact, recent discussion with automotive executives revealed that major change initiatives take a minimum of 2 years before real results can be expected. Two years? Isn’t that too long?

Here’s the point: For those of you who have tried new things - like process training or business development centers to name a few – and have given up on them after just a few months because you didn’t get the results you’d hoped for, maybe you didn’t give it enough time.

When you plant a seed, you need the right soil, fertilizer and the right amount of water and sunshine. You also need a farmer who knows what they’re doing. So ask yourself:

- Have I clearly communicated my vision?
- Am I committed to staying the course even through bad weather?
- Do I have the right people in place that will support the vision and encourage others to do the same?
- Am I (and/or my managers) able to sustain the hopes for success among the members of my team?

Attitude and enthusiasm are critical factors. Just look at the situation in Iraq. Everyone was gung ho but now there is little resolve at home. As attitude and enthusiasm wane, people lose sight of the ultimate goal. That’s why you need to revisit your vision and keep your people updated and refreshed.
