It's not often that I get the opportunity to watch a professional football game live. So as I sat at the 50 yard line during a Bills - Colts game last year, I watched in the same way any enthusiastic Buffalo fan would: By making a mental connection between football and the service process.
In our training we break the service process down into two halves like a football game. We also get participants involved in a vehicle walk around competition that we call "Super Bowl" presentations, and one of the key elements in a successful presentation is body language. So when Peyton Manning took his team down the field for the winning score, I couldn't help but notice how animated he was during that drive.
Most quarterbacks stand under center and turn their heads from side to side much of the game. But during the key drive, Manning was waving his arms, pointing at defenders and even running a few yards in one direction or another to audiblize before the snap. I've never seen a quarterback quite so animated. His enthusiasm and energy seemed to inspire the team toward the goal line and ultimately to a successful conclusion.
As a manager, you are the leader of your team. They need to see you as someone who gets inspired and enthusiastic about success. How you present yourself each and every day can make a huge difference in the success of your team. So consider how you look to those around you. Are you open and encouraging? Does your body language promote positive actions and attitudes?
