We can all learn a lesson from last weeks Seahawks – Ravens game. After the NFL Referee’s admitted that their mistake quite possible cost the Seahawks their first place standing in the NFC West, the coach and players of the Seahawks did exactly what we’ve grown NOT to expect from today’s professional athletes:
They took personal responsibility and blamed themselves for losing the game.
"Yeah, the referee’s made a mistake", said one Seahawk, "But we allowed them to score 41 points! That’s unacceptable". And from the head coach right on down the line, no one pointed a finger at the referees for the end result.
In our profession it’s easy to blame the economy, the lack of incentives and even the customer’s bad credit for our lack of sales success. Instead of stepping up and looking at our mistakes, we point the finger somewhere else. Shame on us!
If professional athletes (who are notorious for whining and complaining about their situation - while making millions of dollars) can take personal responsibility, then you should certainly be able to look at yourself in the mirror and say, "That performance was pathetic".
