Escaping Dealership Depression
What to do when you just don't feel like selling

Very few people make it through life without facing times of depression. Circumstances, boring routines, or just a series of small dissappointments can throw us into a state that handcuffs us mentally and emotionally. The will to act is drained and we would rather just sit and do nothing than get up from our desk.

The problem is that the more we sit, the worse things get. The more we focus internally, the deeper we go into the mire of depression so our performance, and especially how we feel about things, turns downright ugly. The last thing we want to do is talk to people. But if we don't get up and talk to somebody, we can't sell anything and we end up broke and out of a job.

Take the first step

If you haven't yet seen it, rent the video "What About Bob?" with Bill Murray. Not only will it get you laughing, it also comes with some profound advice about change: Take baby steps. Just one small step toward productivity and action is all you need to move you in the right direction. Here are a few ideas of things you can do at the dealership:

1. Clean and organize your desk and sales area - It may not seem like a big deal, but a cluttered desk can add to the feelings of discontent and indecision.

2. Do 10 pushups! What? Are you kidding me? Okay, if you can't do 10, do 5. Do something physical to get your body juices flowing. The mind and the body are more connected than you might think. Getting some stimulation to you body can help stimulate your mind to action.

3. Avoid negative people. "Misery loves company" is a true saying about how people, who are down, love to find and mill around others who will listen. If you're depressed, you're a candidate for attracting other depressed people. Go find someone at the dealership that is upbeat and positive and hang around them for a while.

Don't wait to do something, anything! According to experts, procrastination is the ally of depression. Make the decision to get out of the mud today and make a move, even if it's just a small one.

Here's to your success!
